Metrology for steering and braking systems

The interaction of functionally relevant components in the steering system, such as the steering rack, ball screw drive and their bearings, is crucial for the performance and driving experience of a vehicle. Precise optical and tactile quality assurance is therefore essential in the production process. Modern optical measuring methods make it possible to significantly optimize production processes. At the same time, they increase the functional reliability of the entire steering unit.

Examples of applications include

  • Optical inline measurement of ball screw rods and bearings
  • Dimensional and geometric inspection of ball screws and input shafts
  • Monitoring and analysis of steering unit components

Brake wear is one of the largest non-exhaust-related sources of particulate matter today. In order to significantly reduce particulate emissions, modern brake discs and pads are being developed in such a way that they wear less and release fewer metal and mineral particles. Metrology from Mahr supports this change with precise analysis and measurement methods, both in development and in series production.

These include

  • Determination of porosity and surface structures
  • Optical analysis of cracks, defects and air inclusions
  • Coating thickness measurement and evaluation of high-performance surfaces (e.g. roughness, deformation, waviness)
  • Inline process monitoring of thickness deviations, brake track thicknesses, waviness and geometry
